I had a root canal done on a front tooth some months ago, this tooth already had a crown fitted. Last week the tooth broke...the dentist has done a temporary repair but says the remainder of the tooth will have to be extracted. There will be a gap in my front teeth...the dentist says he cannot do bridge work until the gum shrinks which can be three months...is this right...I would have thought it could be done quicker than that...advice please.
Dental question.?

Reply:god long time to have a gap in yr front tooth aint it but hey least u no what u want for xmas ?????
all i want for chritmas is just one front tooth lol lol lol
Reply:Get an implant put in after you've had your tooth extracted instead. It's expensive but is a lot more secure than a bridge and can look very real. It can take a few months though because of the healing process in between the minor ops (of which don't hurt) but you'll be pleased with the results.
Speak to your dentist about it.
Reply:I would imagine he could do a temporary part denture , but obviously would cost and is it worth it for a few weeks ??
It does take the gum a few weeks to settle down and will shrink . probably more so with such involved surgery to remove the remains of the tooth .
I had a similar issue a few months ago , but mine was an eye tooth which is not quite so noticeable as a front one !!
My previous dentist had messed up the root canal and actually cracked part of the root , therefore when the crown broke the new dentist said it was best to remove the lot !!
You'll just have to stop smiling for a couple of weeks , probably the cost would remove your smile anyway !!
Good luck with the rest of the treatment.
Reply:I am assuming the original tooth was used as a post for the crown and the dentist is intending to take the broken tooth down to gum level. What you should have in the interim is a temporary crown to fill the gap. Bridgework is expensive and although it could be done sooner you'd have to pay for another once the gum had shrunk. Talk to your dentist before he starts work so you fully understand what will will happen. At least the nerve is gone so the work shouldn't be painful.
Reply:I had the same thing 18 years ago. it took 2 months to get a partial it also was in the front .most of it depends on how fast you heal .if you smoke it will take longer as you will keep pulling the blood clot out and belive me that is painful .good luck and make sure they show you the color that they pick for the tooth they like to go to white try to pick a off color that will match well with your other teeth .
